Google Reader MP3 player

Update: I crashed Warren Ellis’ browser. I sent him an email with a link to this post, offering an alternative to Play Tagger. He answered: “That’s three times that page has crashed my browser, now…” Apparently the code I had here was shit so I updated based on what I found here. I hope Ellis doesn’t create a meme in his comics to induce my suicide.

Remember that post I made on Play Tagger? It’s that del.icio.us automatic audio player that would appear on mp3 links on your site. Well that’s shit now.

Over a month ago a story was posted on Digg about how Gmail introduced an embedded audio player. If you receive an MP3 in an email, a Google Video style player would let you stream the music right from their server. Later someone posted somewhere on how to use the player on any site.

Thanks to Last Dojo, I’ve started using Google Reader for the last couple of weeks. When I checked my barely-used podcast feeds, I found that the same Google player is embedded to every post.

In a poor attempt at originality, I’m going to show you how to use the Google Reader Audio Player to play mp3’s and embed it on your site.

All you have to do is copy the following code and paste it where you want the player to appear.

Then replace XXXXX with the complete URL of the mp3 (from http://, down to .mp3). The result is this:

The Slip – “Even Rats” (more)

Now you can brag to your friends that you use the Google Reader Audio Player, while those losers use the Gmail Audio Player.

Note: Hey, look at me, Dojo. I’m posting code!

  1. I tried to put this player on my website. In the HTML editing page, I previewed it, and there it was, but not playing anything. Then when I saved everything, the player got erased somehow and wasn’t in the page when published. When I went back into the HTML to check, there was empty space where I had inputted.the player’s code.

    How to make it work?
